martin luther king, on that day, faced a crisis of his own. the civil rights legislation that john f. kennedy finally introduced in june of '63, pushed by the demonstrations in birmingham, which revealed the police dogs dogs and the fire h. suddenly the government had to act. the first great accomplishment of lynn johnson son, that not much attention is given to, is the magnificent way he assumed the presidency. this was a nation in crisis. we had a cold war going on. in which the -- there was huge fear of russian missiles heading our way. our president had been killed. we didn't know whether it was the russians who had kill him or castro or -- it was great, great uncertainty. and johnson came to that job, reassured the nation, took the reins of government, and during that first year, he was president, passed the historic 1964 civil rights act, which outlawed official segregation in the south, made employment discrimination a crime. it was a very, very -- probably the most important advance since lincoln signed the emancipation proclaimation,

when did you first get to be interested in martin luther king? >> guest: when i was in high school as a young fellow growing up in atlanta georgia my parents didn't have an answer. it became kind of a quest to find out about it in the sense that there was enormous power and that would change the direction of my life. when i wasn't looking for it to happen. c-span: how many of your years did you think about this? >> guest: i started after i got into a book career in the late 70's after magazine journalism. i wanted to write about this period because i hadn't answered the question what is it made of and i thought in 1981 with what was proposed to be a three year history of the teen years and it's now been 16 years and i've done it in two volumes is now projected to be a trilogy or will be a trilogy after i finish it but i would have 20 years. definitely turning into my life work but i'm thankful for the privilege of it. c-span: the first book, parting the waters, 1,056 pages. this but there are 546 pages. what's been your approach? >> guest: to do

and there is a new civil rights battle in a town where martin luther king first marched almost 50 years ago. some workers at this nissan plant in canton, mississippi, they want to vote. they want to orgize. now a coalition of activist workers, students, and clergy members have joined forces in the community to make sure that thousands of employees get a chance to be heard. now some of the workers say the supervisors hold anti-union meetings. the workers just want to hear from the pro union side so they can have a fair vote. that's all they want to do is vote. the naacp has been involved for months on this issue. 70% of the workers at the canton plant are african-american. representative bennie thompson addressed the issue back in june. >> in america, being able to decide whether or not you want representation is a fundamental principle of civil rights, human rights in a democracy. >> this week, those same civil rights organizers held another news conference, of all places -- they're serious -- they went all the way to detroit, the detroit auto show. that's where they got up when it got
